The industry of supplemental vitamins is valued at $39 billion USD, and it continues to grow. A majority of Americans, including 70% of those over 70 years old, take a vitamin. About one-third of these people also use multivitamin pills. Is this really a necessity?
A lack of certain nutrients can lead to many diseases. Retinyl Palmitate Lactobacillus Paracasei AmazonScurvy, which is caused by a deficiency of vitamin C, Beri-beri (vitaminB1), pellagra, (vitaminB3) and Rickets (vitaminD) are some examples. These conditions are more common in the U.S. than in other developed countries, where it is easier to access a wider range of foods and some of which have been fortified with vitamins. Supplementation with individual vitamins may be necessary in some cases.
For example, if the body is not functioning correctly or has suffered from long-term poor nutrition, or malabsorption. We will discuss situations where multivitamins may be beneficial for health. They may have difficulty chewing or swallowing, experience unpleasant taste changes due to multiple medications, or feel isolated and lonely, which can lead to a decreased appetite. They may also have difficulty absorbing nutrients. A B vitamin is particularly important for women who might become pregnant. Folate can lower the chance of having a baby born with spina bifurca or anencephaly. Folate must be taken within the first few weeks after conception. This is often before the woman realizes she is pregnant. Half of all pregnancies in America are unplanned.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that all women between 15 and 45 years of age, who are considered to be pregnant, consume 600 micrograms of folic acid per day. This and other nutrients are important for pregnancy. Acid reflux medications and heartburn medication can cause vitamin B12 and calcium to be ineffective. The absorption of levodopa or carbidopa, which are prescribed for Parkinson’s Disease, can be reduced.
Multivitamins are available in many forms, including tablets, capsules and liquids. They can be packaged as a specific blend of nutrients (B-complex or calcium with vitamin D), or as a complete multivitamin.
